Designprocesses are increasingly deployed to create solutions for societal problems. Increasingly the focus has shifted towards the human individual in relation to others as well as to the urban environment and nature. Public involvement by designers is not new. Social design is a design direction which has existed ever since Bauhaus. Until this century, it remained largely limited to aesthetics regarding shaping and forming by following ergonomic and engineering guidelines.The current break-through of social design was initiated by leading design agencies who were searching for a more valid role of design and rediscovering the ‘human’ or ‘user’ (in relation to others) as the decisive factor.

Designprocessen worden momenteel steeds meer ingezet bij het aanpakken van maatschappelijke vraagstukken. De focus wordt meer en meer gericht op het individu in relatie tot anderen, op de stedelijke omgeving en op de natuur. Maatschappelijke betrokkenheid van ontwerpers is natuurlijk niet nieuw. Social design is een ontwerpstroming die al sinds Bauhaus bestaat. Tot begin deze eeuw bleef dit echter beperkt tot ‘verantwoord’ vormgeven volgens ergonomische principes en ingenieursvisies. De huidige doorbraak van social design werd in gang gezet door toonaangevende ontwerpbureaus die, op zoek naar de echt relevante rol van design, op zeker moment de ‘mens’, de ‘gebruiker’ (in relatie tot anderen) herontdekten als allesbepalende factor.
On the 21st of November we will offer you a multi-discplinairy line-up: designers, architects, artists, city planners, end users and philosophers. All will be presenting inspiring examples in the famous 20 slides x 20 seconds format.
